Students Travel Abroad During Spring BreakSixteen Walker College of Business students recently spent their spring break in Brazil studying social entrepreneurship. During their 10 days there, students observed ways in which entrepreneurial businesses can have positive social and economic impacts in poor areas of developing countries.

North Carolina Bankers Association Chairman Will Deliver Commencement Address to May GraduatesCitizens South Bank President and NCBA Chairman Kim Price will be the speaker at Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business 2009 spring commencement. About 400 students will receive degrees at the event, which will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 9, in the Holmes Convocation Center.

Walker College Alumna Gives Her Account of Surviving the Water Landing of Flight 1549Jenny Moulton was among the many Walker College graduates to take part in the 10th annual Alumni Day February 9. She works with Fairpoint, the eighth largest incumbent wireline company in the US, and attended the event with fellow alumna and colleague, Angela Matherly. Moulton was the only participant, however, who could give a first-hand account of the Miracle on the Hudson, the plane crash she survived only days earlier.

Appalachian Business Alumnus Has Creative Plan for Economic Stimulus FundsAt least one national business columnist thinks that Citizens South Bank President and CEO Kim Price could teach the big banks a few lessons about creative use of the U.S. government’s federal stimulus funds. Price, a 1977 graduate of Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business, caught the attention of the Washington Post and other newspapers for his plans to put funds from the Troubled Assets Relief Program to work in the six counties that Citizens South serves.

Sophomore Wins First Student Entrepreneur of the Year AwardAppalachian State sophomore Eric “Chris” Cornwell is more than a man of ideas. He’s a man of action and acumen. And, after the recent Young Entrepreneurs Symposium (YES), he’s also the first Student Entrepreneur of the Year. The award was presented before more than 350 ASU students, faculty, staff and community members during the symposium, which attracted several alumni entrepreneurs to campus to speak about their business efforts.

Computer Information Systems Students Take Top Honors at National ConferenceTwelve students from Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business won seven national awards at the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) National Collegiate Conference in Oklahoma City April 2-5.

Appalachian MBA Students Travel to China and Hong KongStudents in the MBA program traveled to China and Hong Kong in March to learn first-hand about the interconnected global economy. Appalachian alumni and business people in Asia facilitated the learning experience. The group benefited from the hospitality of Walker College of Business young alumni who now live and work in China. Business people with connections to the Walker College of Business arranged numerous company visits and exchanges with academic and business experts.

Finance and Banking Students Make Annual Trek to Charlotte on March 27Accompanied by Walker College of Business professors Jeff Hobbs, Delbert Goff and Chris McNeil, several students from the departments of Actuarial Sciences and Finance, Banking and Insurance visited with speakers from Lowe’s, Bank of America and Family Dollar. In addition to discussing their respective companies, the speakers addressed some topics universally applicable to students about to graduate, such as resume building, balancing work with life, and preparing to enter the work force in a struggling economy.

Business Fraternity Earns Honors at National ConventionAppalachian earned top honors during the Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE) 2009 National Convention held in Norfolk, Va. The chapter, Gamma Xi, was awarded the President’s Award for Most Improved Chapter, took second place in Top Management Team and Top Sales Project Tier 1 categories, and received the Lloyd L. Antle Top Amethyst Chapter Award. The group also was a finalist in the Special Merit category.

Appalachian and European Students Live and Learn TogetherA unique international study opportunity involves students in a semester-long entrepreneurship course, which this year brought together students from Appalachian State and the Universite Catholique de Louvain (UCL) in Belgium.
