Young Entrepreneurs Symposium scheduled for Feb. 23

Appalachian State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship will hold the annual Young Entrepreneurs Symposium (Y.E.S.) Feb. 23 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center on campus. The event is sponsored by Backyard Burgers.

Spring 2011 Harlan Boyles Lecture Features Duke Endowment President Gene Cochrane

Eugene “Gene” Cochrane Jr., president of The Duke Endowment, will be the speaker at the spring Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture at Appalachian State University. The lecture series is named for the late Harlan E. Boyles, who served for 24 years as N.C. state treasurer. The lecture and reception are open to the public. The event, sponsored by the Walker College of Business, will be held Thursday, March 17, at 2 p.m. in Farthing Auditorium on campus. A reception will follow at 3:15 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center.

Hiring in High Country Expected to Increase, According to Walker College Centers

The number of High Country business owners expecting to hire new employees in the coming year is double the number expecting layoffs, according to a newly released report from Appalachian State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and the Center for Economic Research & Policy Analysis. The eight-county High Country region includes Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey counties.

Faculty Honored for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service

Four Appalachian State University faculty members in the Walker College of Business have received the college’s 2010 Award for Excellence. Dr. David McEvoy received the college’s award for teaching. Dr. Joseph Cazier was honored for his research contributions. The award for excellence in service was presented to Dr. Lyle Schoenfeldt. Rachel Keller was honored as the outstanding non-tenure track faculty member.

Risk Management & Insurance Program is Among Nation's 10 Largest

The risk management program in Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business is included on Risk Management magazine’s September list of “The 10 Largest Risk and Insurance Schools.” The program, based in the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance, is No. 4 on the list for the number of students it graduated in 2009-10, a total of 55. The University of Georgia had the biggest program with 129 graduates in the area of risk management in 2009-10.

Sustainability and Energy Efficiency are Electric Utility's Focus, says Duke Energy CEO James Rogers

Customers want electricity that’s affordable. Industrialists want a reliable, year-round power source. Environmentalists want electricity produced from clean, renewable resources. James Rogers, CEO of Duke Energies, says all three are his priorities. Rogers spoke Oct. 12 at the Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture.

Appalachian MBA Program Highlighted in 2011 Princeton Review

Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business has been included in “The Best 300 Business Schools: 2011 Edition” by the Princeton Review for its Master of Business Administration program.

Prospective Entrepreneurs Pitched Their Ideas During the 2010 Entrepreneur Summit

Students pitched their best business ideas to a panel of judges during the 9th Annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit. This year’s winners were Katie Cavert who placed first, Steven Sciara who placed second and Summer Gavaghan who placed third.

Forsyth Receives First Kenneth E. Peacock Endowed Professorship for Accounting

Dr. Timothy Forsyth, chair of the Department of Accounting in Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business, has been selected to receive the Kenneth E. Peacock Endowed Accounting Professorship.
