Hiring in High Country Expected to Increase, According to Walker College Centers
The number of High Country business owners expecting to hire new employees in the coming year is double the number expecting layoffs, according to a newly released report from Appalachian State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and the Center for Economic Research & Policy Analysis. The eight-county High Country region includes Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Caldwell, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey counties.

Faculty Honored for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service
Four Appalachian State University faculty members in the Walker College of Business have received the college’s 2010 Award for Excellence.
Dr. David McEvoy received the college’s award for teaching. Dr. Joseph Cazier was honored for his research contributions. The award for excellence in service was presented to Dr. Lyle Schoenfeldt. Rachel Keller was honored as the outstanding non-tenure track faculty member.

Risk Management & Insurance Program is Among Nation's 10 Largest
The risk management program in Appalachian State University’s Walker College of Business is included on Risk Management magazine’s September list of “The 10 Largest Risk and Insurance Schools.” The program, based in the Department of Finance, Banking and Insurance, is No. 4 on the list for the number of students it graduated in 2009-10, a total of 55. The University of Georgia had the biggest program with 129 graduates in the area of risk management in 2009-10.

Customers want electricity that’s affordable. Industrialists want a reliable, year-round power source. Environmentalists want electricity produced from clean, renewable resources. Students pitched their best business ideas to a panel of judges during the 9th Annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit. This year’s winners were Katie Cavert who placed first, Steven Sciara who placed second and Summer Gavaghan who placed third.
