Global Opportunities Conference - Get Connected: Strategies for Going Global - Scheduled for April 1

The 3rd Annual Global Opportunities Conference and Expo - Get Connected: Strategies for Going Global - will be held April 1 from 9:30am-4pm at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. The conference, a forum for business professionals, students and the academic community to gain knowledge of trends in international business and opportunities to increase their international connections, is free and lunch is provided.

President of The Duke Endowment to Serve as March 17 Boyles Lecturer

ASU graduate and The Duke Endowment President Eugene “Gene” Cochrane Jr. will be the speaker at the spring Harlan E. Boyles Distinguished CEO Lecture. The event will be held at 2pm on March 17 in Farthing Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Bowden Investment Group Annual Report Available Online

Since 2000, the Bowden Investment Fund has grown by more than seven times its original investment, according to the latest annual report by the Walker College student group which oversees it. The original $10,678.21 balance now stands at $80,638.93. It has achieved that growth through donors and the stewardship of students who comprise the Bowden Investment Group, which meets as a class and receives course credit by managing the live stock portfolio.

Walker College Alumnus Named CEO of Yadkin Valley Financial Corporation

Joseph H. Towell '74 ECON '78 MBA has been named CEO with Yadkin Valley Financial Corporation. He had been the acting President and Chief Operating Officer.

Economist John Silvia Sees Inflationary Trend Due to Food Prices

For months economists have debated whether inflation was under control or set to climb. John Silvia, chief economist with Wells Fargo and member of the Walker College Business Advisory Council, recently said the answer is getting clearer.

Student Entrepreneur of the Year Announced During Feb. 23 Young Entrepreneurs Symposium

J. Ryan Barringer, a senior theatre arts major, has received the 2011 Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The $2,500 scholarship award is presented annually by the Center for Entrepreneurship to recognize exceptional entrepreneurial achievement by a student. It was presented during the 2011 Young Entrepreneurs Symposium, which was sponsored by Backyard Burgers.

Walker College Alumnus Lends Hand to Extreme Makeover

From the Appalachian Alumni Blog, The Appalachian Alumni Blog recently posted a photo of Walker College grad Maury Kennedy '93 MGT and Appalachian grad Mike Fowler ’03 from the set of the ABC television show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. The broadcast aired January 30.

Charlotte Business Journal Profiles 3tailer as One of the Region's Fasted-Growing Companies

The Charlotte Business Journal recently profiled the young company 3tailer, started by Jon West ‘06 CIS and Chad Ledford ‘06 MGT. 3tailer is named No. 2 on the publication’s Fast 50 list, a compilation of “the region’s fastest-growing privately held companies.”

December 2010 Commencement Video and Photos Available for Online Viewing

The Walker College, along with the College of Health Sciences, College of Fine and Applied Arts and Hayes School of Music, honored its December 2010 graduates during a 2 p.m. ceremony held Sunday, December 12. The entire ceremony is online.
